The Jarawa Tribal Reserve is one of India’s most important and sensitive protected areas, located across the western parts of South Andaman and Middle Andaman Islands. The reserve was established to safeguard the Jarawa tribe, one of the oldest surviving indigenous communities in the world.
Ancient Origins of the Jarawa Tribe – The Jarawa are believed to be among the world’s oldest tribal communities. Scientists and anthropologists suggest that their ancestors migrated from Africa thousands of years ago and eventually settled in the Andaman Islands. For centuries, they lived in complete isolation, developing their own language, culture, hunting traditions, and way of life deep within the forests.
During the British Colonial Period – Before the arrival of the British in 1789, the Jarawa people occupied large areas of South Andaman. As British settlements expanded and forests were cleared for colonies, conflicts began between settlers and the Jarawa tribe. Diseases introduced by outsiders also affected the tribal population, leading to a significant decline in their numbers.
Establishment of the Jarawa Tribal Reserve Area- To protect the tribe and preserve their traditional lifestyle, the Government of India established the Jarawa Tribal Reserve in 1957. The boundaries and protection measures were further strengthened through official notifications in 1979. Today, the reserve covers more than 1,000 square kilometers of dense tropical forest.
A Historic Change in 1997 – For most of their history, the Jarawa lived completely isolated from the outside world and avoided contact with outsiders. Until the late 1990s, encounters were rare, and the tribe was known to defend its territory from intruders.
A major historical shift occurred around 1997–1998 when some members of the Jarawa tribe voluntarily began approaching nearby settlements. This marked the beginning of limited and controlled interactions with the outside world.
Protection and Conservation – Today, the Jarawa tribe is protected under the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Protection of Aboriginal Tribes) Regulation, 1956. Return to Port Blair After completing your visit to the Mud Volcano, return to Baratang Jetty and begin your journey back to Port Blair via the same route. You will again cross the vehicle ferry from Nilambur Jetty to Middle Strait Jetty, followed by the convoy journey through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve Area before reaching Port Blair in the evening.

Starting early in the morning around 8–8:30 AM is highly recommended because the weather remains cooler, the trail feels more comfortable and visitors get more time to enjoy the beach before high tide starts rising later in the day. During high tide, some sections near the beach may become knee-deep in water.
The trekking path is generally simple and easy to follow for most travellers, even without a guide, as there are no major confusing turns. However, since there are no signboards inside the forest area, trekking during nighttime should be avoided. Along the route, visitors may spot small lizards, crabs, mangrove life and occasionally even snakes as this is a natural reserve forest area. During the monsoon season, some muddy sections become deeper and can reach foot-level mud, which many adventure lovers jokingly describe as a natural mud spa experience.
Wearing proper trekking attire, comfortable shoes and carrying a water bottle is strongly recommended because there are no shops inside the forest area. Small stalls selling water and packaged snacks are available only near the trek entrance point. Carrying a walking stick can also be useful during slippery or muddy conditions.
This trek may not be ideal for senior citizens, very small children or travellers with BP, asthma or serious walking difficulties because certain sections involve small uphill climbs, uneven terrain and continuous walking for around an hour including return time. For travellers who prefer assistance, local guides are also available for hire, usually around ₹500 per group.
Most importantly, please do not throw any garbage inside the jungle or trekking trail area. Avoid littering plastic bottles, chips packets, food wrappers or parcel containers inside the forest.
