About Barren Island Volcano – A Natural Wonder of India

Here are some interesting features if you love geography, geology, or just cool facts

India’s Only Active Volcano – Barren Island is the only confirmed active volcano in India and the entire Indian subcontinent. Eruptions have been recorded since 1787.

Part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire” Even though it is in the Bay of Bengal, Barren Island is geologically connected to the massive tectonic rim known as the Ring of Fire, famous for volcanoes and earthquakes.

Barren Island Location About 135 km from Port Blair

  • No human population (as the name says “Barren”)
  • Surrounded by deep blue waters with rich marine life

Previous Major eruptions occurred in the year 1787 (first recorded), 1991–1994, 2005, 2017 and now again in 2025

Each eruption changes the island’s shape slightly — new vents open, lava flows adjust the coastline, and the island “breathes” differently.

Marine Life Around the Volcano the ocean around the Barren Island are surprisingly full of aqua life like Manta rays, Sharks, Huge schools of tuna

Crystal-clear scuba diving sites (though diving is restricted during active eruptions) snorkelling can be done but by the private charter boats only

Why This Barren Island Cruise Is So Special

  • This is the first time DSS has opened a nighttime volcano-viewing cruise for the public.
  • Watching an active volcano erupt in real time is something only a few people on earth ever experience.
  • The night sky, glowing lava, and the ocean together create a surreal scene — photographers and nature lovers will go crazy over it.
  •  It’s safe, guided, and regulated by the Andaman administration.

If you’re visiting Andaman anytime soon, do not miss this. This is raw nature in its purest form — unpredictable, powerful, and unforgettable.

Important Things to Note Before You Book The Barren Island Volcano Trip

  • No disembarkation is allowed at Barren Island — the cruise is strictly for viewing only.
  • The trip is eco-sensitive, so safety norms and regulatory restrictions apply.
  • Make sure to book early, especially for premium cabins — they’re likely to sell out fast.
  • Be prepared for changes or cancellations due to weather, since the sea conditions play a big role.
  • The cruise operates only twice a month — on the second Friday and fourth Friday. Plan your itinerary accordingly so that you are in Port Blair on Friday night to board the ship. If you wish, you can continue your trip to Havelock Island the following day, as the cruise returns to Port Blair early the next morning.
  • Do not throw garbage into the sea or on the cruise. Andaman is incredibly beautiful — please avoid littering. Keeping the islands clean is our shared moral responsibility to protect this planet and preserve its natural wonders.
