Mayabunder is nestled in the Northern part of Middle Andaman, approximately 242 km away from Port Blair. Unlike its neighbouring islands, Mayabunder is a low-key destination with lesser-known tourist spots. However, it holds a unique charm due to its cultural diversity and historical significance. The town is known for its fascinating mix of Bangladesh and East Pakistani settlers, ex-convicts, and the Burmese hill tribe called Karen, who was relocated here during the British colonial period.

Even though Mayabunder is the administrative centre for the North and Middle Andaman Islands, it is still a tiny town with little facilities for tourists.

The shoreline of Mayabunder is adorned with picturesque mangroves, and though the beaches may not be as popular as those on other islands, Karmatang Beach stands out with its long stretch of grey volcanic sand and shallow waters. Getting Around in Mayabunder

Getting around Mayabunder is a breeze, as most of the town’s attractions can be easily reached on foot. The best method, however, is to take a local bus to get to Karmatang Beach, which is 13 kilometres distant. Public jeeps and auto-rickshaws are also offered, however, they may be rather pricey for visitors. It’s recommended to inquire about the price before taking a ride.

How to Reach Mayabunder

To reach Mayabunder, there are daily buses from Port Blair that travel via Baratang and Rangat on the Andaman Trunk Road. The buses usually depart from Port Blair early in the morning (around 4 am) and continue till 11 am. The journey can be tiring and bumpy, taking around nine to ten hours due to the dense jungle and ferry connections between islands.

Another option to reach Mayabunder is by taking a ferry from Phoenix Bay Jetty in Port Blair to Diglipur, which passes through Mayabunder. The ferry journey takes about eight to nine hours, depending on the weather conditions. There are two weekly ferries available, usually on Mondays and Fridays, but it’s essential to check the timetables online or at the ticket counter or on the official website for any changes.

Sightseeing and Activities

Mayabunder offers various options for nature and adventure lovers. You can take day trips to nearby islands for snorkeling, wildlife watching, and even game fishing. One recommended activity is a jungle trek along Interview Island, where wild elephants roam. Special permits are required to visit Interview Island, which can be arranged at the Forest Department office. Other highlights include trips to Forty-One Caves and snorkeling off Avis Island.

Accommodation in Mayabunder

In terms of accommodation, Mayabunder is slowly developing, so the options are limited. Sea ‘N’ Sand is considered the best place to stay, offering simple yet spacious rooms with friendly owners who can provide information about the place and its hidden attractions. The Tourism Department also runs a resort near the jetty, providing reasonably decent and comfortable rooms for government officials. Additionally, there are cheap and simple lodges available near the main market, but they are often occupied by locals from other islands.

Restaurants and Dining

When it comes to dining, Mayabunder has a few low-key eateries that serve Indian cuisine. The main market offers fresh fruits, vegetables, and shops selling refreshments and snacks. The restaurant called “Kadai at Sea’N’Sand” is the only one with traces of multi-cuisine dishes, offering homemade Indian food and seafood barbecue during the season.
